Cataracts

Cataract - Summit EyecareA cataract is a clouding of the natural lens inside the eye. It is the leading cause of blindness in all areas of the world. A cataract is not a “skim” or a “film” over the eye. It is a thickening of the lens that causes light to be distorted so it cannot reach the back of the retina causing decreased to no transmission.

Causes

Causes of cataracts include:

  • The natural aging process
  • Congenital
  • Trauma
  • Diabetes
  • Use of certain medications

Symptoms

Symptoms include blurry or dim vision, poor night vision, colors appearing faded, halos around lights, and sensitivity to bright lights.

Treatment

There are exciting new advances in cataract surgery that involve premium lens implants. These lens implants as will be discussed below help you perform a variety of activities under optimal vision correction. At Summit Eye Care our goal is to provide a customizing solution to your eye care needs.

Standard Lens Implants

Single-Focal Lens Implants are best for many cataract patients. The single piece implants give patients the best clarity at one distance – either far way, intermediate or up close vision. Glasses will be necessary after surgery.

Premium Lens Implants

Multifocal lens offer the incredible opportunity to see well at more than one distance, with less dependence on glasses. These premium lens implants are for select patients that meet specific patient selection criteria set by Dr. Khemsara.

Eyeonics Crystalens implant is the first FDA-approved “accommodating” intraocular lens implant. It corrects vision best for distance and intermediate, but objects at near distances may still be somewhat out of focus. The advantage of this lens is less glare and sharper contrast. But most patients still need reading glasses.

Astigmatism Correcting Lens Implants

The toric lens implant corrects both astigmatism and cataracts simultaneously. The lens incorporates an optical design that is able to correct for preexisting astigmatism. The lens that Dr. Khemsara prefers is the Alcon AcrySof Toric Lens implant.

Alcon AcrySof Restor Implant

Alcon AcrySof Restor Implant uses a diffractive technology that provides the best combination of up close, intermediate, and distance vision. FDA studies with this lens showed that 80% if patients never wore glasses after this procedure. For More information visit AcrySofRestor.com
