An intraocular lens (IOL) is an artificial lens that is used to replace your eye’s natural lens. IOLs can correct many different eye disorders, including:

• Cataracts
• Presbyopia
• Hyperopia (nearsightedness)
• Astigmatism

There are several different types of IOLs available, each suitable for a particular type of eye disorder. Dr. Khemsara offers only the most advanced and effective IOLs on the market today to help you obtain crystal-clear vision.

HOW IOLs WORK

Your eyes are always adjusting to focus on different distances and in different light levels. This ability to shift focus is technically called “accommodation.” As you grow older, your lenses harden and your eyes’ natural ability to accommodate diminishes, resulting in presbyopia (when close objects are always blurry). Meanwhile, other people develop cataracts on their natural lenses as they age.

IOLs work by providing your eyes with a new artificial lens that allows clear distance and near vision at all times. Your brain learns to automatically select the focus that is best, depending on what you are looking at. Think of having a conversation in a room; if there is background music, your brain is able to “tune out” the music in order to listen to the conversation. The same is true with visual focus and IOLs.

ReSTOR® LENS

One of the most popular IOLs we offer is the ReSTOR® lens – an advanced multifocal lens that provides clear vision at all distances. ReSTOR® uses the same diffractive and refractive technology that is used in microscopes, with different “zones” that work together to focus light correctly.

TORIC IOL FOR ASTIGMATISM

Approximately 20% of patients who have cataracts also have a significant degree of astigmatism. The Toric IOL is the world’s first intraocular lens specifically designed to reduce severe astigmatism during cataract surgery. If you need cataract surgery and have suffered from astigmatism all your life, Dr. Khemsara may recommend the implantation of a Toric IOL.
