A traditional monofocal IOL is designed to provide clear vision primarily at one selected distance, most commonly distance vision.

Monofocal lenses have been used successfully in cataract surgery for many years and remain an excellent option for many patients.

Potential benefits include:

• Clear distance vision

• A straightforward lens design

• Reliable, predictable optical performance

• An established option for cataract surgery

​​​​​​​The tradeoff is that monofocal lenses do not provide the same range of focus as some advanced lens technologies.

If distance vision is targeted, most patients will still need glasses for reading and other close-up activities after surgery.
